A recently released report reveals that Apple has stopped working on a project that would allow two nearby iPhone users to communicate with each other, even in areas without cellular connectivity. It was rumored that Apple was working on the project with Intel. Using long-distance radio waves, the two iPhones could exchange text messages in areas without cellular signals. The technology works like a walkie-talkie, except that instead of transmitting the voice, text messages will be sent back and forth.
The system would work in the 900MHz band used by shippers working in the public services, oil, and gas sector. A source cited in the report states that the Intel cellular modems found in the 2019 iPhones would have been used for this function. One of the reasons Apple could present the project is that next year it will use Qualcomm modem chips again. Apple ended up buying the business of Intel’s smartphone modem chips for an estimated $ 1 billion, so when Apple starts designing its own modem chips using the Intel platform, the company may decide to give this feature another appearance. However, an Apple-designed modem chip should not be used on iPhones until 2025.
The OGRS project could end with a future Apple iPhone model
Within Apple, the “Walkie-Talkie” feature was known as Project OGRS for off-grid radio service. The Apple executive who called the project his “baby”, Rubén Caballero, left the company earlier this year, perhaps another reason why Apple decided not to do it.
A similar feature was created by a company called goTenna that sells its Mesh accessory for $ 179 a pair. The device is associated with a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone and an application to create a mobile mesh network that can connect to other Mesh users to send private or group messages within a four-mile radius. This is done without the use of a cellular or satellite network and allows users to share their locations with the same users. The device works with any phone with iOS or Android. The co-founder and CEO of the company, Daniela Perdomo, says she hopes the manufacturers will include goTenna technology in their phones and has already produced a module that phone manufacturers can integrate with their devices.
The 2019 iPhones should be presented on September 10th. We should see the iPhone 11 with a 6.1-inch LCD screen, the iPhone 11 Pro (5.8 inches) and the iPhone 11 Pro (6.5 inches). The last two models will carry OLED panels and could support a mini version of Apple Pencil. All three models will have a square camera module in the upper left corner of the rear panel. The two “Pro” phones will be equipped with three cameras on the back (primary + telephoto with 2x optical zoom + ultra-wide-angle), while the LCD unit will have two cameras on the rear panel (primary + telephoto). We hope they offer optimized images in low light conditions and offer quality photos in competition with those taken by traditional cameras.
We should see an increase in the capacity of the batteries used in the new models with the iPhone 11 Pro (6.5 inches) which should come with a 4000 mAh battery. It would be the largest battery ever inserted in an iPhone. The additional battery life will be useful for the planned wireless inverse function that will allow the iPhone 2019 to be used as a wireless charging platform to turn on AirPods (in a wireless charging case), the Apple Watch or other compatible phones. The new phones are believed to have an improved type of water resistance that could allow users to access the touchscreen even underwater.
