The 2019 iPhones are not yet official, but that doesn’t stop analysts from talking about next year’s lineup. Among these is Ming-Chi Kuo, who believes that some 2020 models will introduce a new rear-facing sensor.
In a recently published note, the well-known analyst revealed that Apple plans to add rear flight time sensors to next year’s iPhone models. But unlike 5G, which reportedly will be available on all three devices, the new 3D detection system should only land in the company’s most premium offers the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Max.
According to Bloomberg’s previous rumors, Apple will use VCSEL (vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser) in its iPhone 2020 line. These are similar to the TrueDepth camera system that includes the current iPhones, but in the end, can trace much larger areas. By way of comparison, Face ID currently operates at distances between 25 and 50 centimeters, while time-of-flight cameras facing backward on next year’s devices should be able to scan objects that are 4.6 feet away.
iPhone 2020’s flagship buyers should see an immediate improvement in portrait photos because the added depth data should help make Apple’s blurred background more accurate and even more natural. However, the greatest benefit is expected to take the form of a “revolutionary AR experience”. The details on this have not yet been revealed, but next year the Cupertino giant should focus heavily on augmented reality. The company has already started to upgrade AR content, but in the end, it should take things to the next level with the iPhone 2020s. This, in turn, will probably help to upgrade Apple’s AR glasses, which could be announced at some point this year or in the first half of 2020.
It is worth noting that Apple’s new flight time sensors may not debut on the iPhone line next year. Instead, Kuo believes the Silicon Valley-based company could use them first in the next-generation iPad Pro line that is expected to be launched in early 2020.
Face ID Will Accompany New Screen sizes, More Efficient Chips
Returning to the iPhone line, Ming-Chi Kuo also stated that this year’s direct successors of iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Max and iPhone 11R will keep Face ID. It is unclear whether major upgrades are expected at this time, but rumors suggest that Apple will reduce the size of its brand or eliminate it completely if the technology is up to scratch.
The new redesigned front panel should be another rather drastic change. Currently, Apple uses 5.8-inch, 6.1-inch and 6.5-inch screens in its iPhone lineup, but next year the company will report that things will change with 5.4-inch and 6.7-inch screens for its most premium devices. As for the rear design, Apple should adhere to the new square camera module that will be released on iPhone 11. This year, the only difference is that the fourth flight time sensor mentioned above will probably be added to the design. Furthermore, the iPhone 12R could access the super wide-angle camera that will be featured on the 2019 flagships.
The completion of the iPhone 12 line will probably be Apple’s Bionic A14 chip, which should be integrated into the new 5-nanometer production process. This should result in a significant increase in efficiency and significant performance improvements. Along with the chip, there must be new Qualcomm modems that will replace the current Intel equivalents and will support the mmWave and sub-6GHz bands for 5G networks.
Finally, there is the possibility that next year’s iPhone series will replace the Lightning connector with a USB-C port. The change has been said for years and, according to reports, Apple has created iPhone 11 prototypes with the connector. Then perhaps 2020 is the year in which we will finally bid farewell to Lightning.
