What exactly is the IP address?
Want to know what the IP address? IP means Internet Protocol and an IP address a numbered label assigned to each device that connects to a network.
Verifying the IP address of a device allows it to be identified both in the home network and on the Internet in general. In fact, it has two IP addresses to track each device.
A global IP address also known as the public IP address is the way the rest of the Internet sees any device on the network. Since this is network-specific, your global IP will be the same if you use your phone, desktop or another device at home.
A private IP address also known as a local IP address identifies a device in your network. Only one device can have a certain address in a network, but the same address can also be used in other private networks.
Also, when the IP address occurs, it is likely that you see both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. IPv4 addresses are shorter, but due to the huge number of devices connected to the Internet, we are short of them. The IPv6 address is not so easy to read, but there are enough to work long.
In most cases, IPv4 is still the main address, but IPv6 will gradually remove them as we migrate to that format.
Suppose, if your friend wants to send you a postcard, they will ask for the address of your home or office. Likewise, the PC has an “IP address”, which is your unique identifier in the device’s network. Other devices refer to the system that uses this IP address.
The PC receives a private IP address when connecting to other devices such as a router. At the same time, when the device is connected to the Internet, an additional IP address known as a public IP is assigned. This public IP is provided by your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and is unique. The local IP address also known as internal IP or private IP is different from the public IP address that is also known as public IP.
In addition to allowing the connection of multiple devices, a local network is very useful for a variety of things like file sharing between two computers, displaying what other users are browsing the network, remote access to the router, etc. To do all these things, first, you need to know the IP address of the device.
Therefore, any device that connects to the Internet has two IP addresses.
- The external IP address is also known as public IP (looks something like 79.343.34.11)
- Internal IP addresses known as private IP addresses (looks something like 192.168.1.100)
The public IP is the same for all devices in your network. For example, if there are three devices, a desktop computer, a laptop and a smartphone connected to the router. The three will have a public IP address that the ISP will assign to the router. In general, you can find the public IP address by searching for “What is my IP address” in Google?
On the other hand, the private IP address is different for every device in your network. A private IP address can be between 10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255, 172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255 and 192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255. Normally, most routers assign 192.168.0.0 series IP addresses for devices on the local network. So, if your computer has a private IP address of 192.168.1.100, then the smartphone could be 192.168.1.101 and so on.
In this article, we will discuss some ways to find the IP address of the device, whether Ubuntu, MacOS, Windows, Android or iOS. In case you want to know the IP address of any device on the network, keep reading the article till the end to see how to find the IP address of any device.

But before that, it is important to understand the difference between dynamic and static IP addresses that you can find right below.
Dynamic and Static IP Addresses
Most of the time the IP addresses you found earlier are not set in stone. In both cases, you might have a dynamic IP address.
This means that after a while or when restarting a device, the device or the entire network will receive a new IP. Conversely, a static IP does not change over time in this way.
Dynamic public IPs are easier to manage for your ISP (like Verizon or Comcast). You can request a static IP from your ISP, but they often cost an additional fee. They are not necessary for home users unless you are hosting a server accessible by other people.
The router dynamically distributes private IP addresses to network devices using DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). In practice, this means that when you connect a new device to your home Wi-Fi network, you don’t need to manually assign an IP address and keep track of everything yourself.
If you wish, you can assign static IP addresses using the router and configuration on multiple devices. But again, this is just something that advanced users should be concerned about. Doing it incorrectly could cause serious problems.
Check IP Address of Computer and Smartphones
1. Windows 10/8/7

2. Once you get to the Control Panel menu, go to “View network status and tasks“. It is present under the options of network and Internet. Click on the link to open the active networks menu.
3. On the next screen, you can see your active networks just below the “View your active networks” heading. Click on the name of your Internet connection. In this case, I’m connected to the Wi-Fi network, so my active networks should be the name of the Wi-Fi network. Click the link next to the label of Connections.
4. Once the pop-up window appears, click on the “Details” button to open the network details.
5. In this window, you can find your local IP address next to the property of “IPv4 Address“.
