OnePlus CEO: foldable smartphone not in the works, OnePlus TV is the focus

OnePlus came into existence in December 2013 and since then it has introduced a number of accessories, flagship smartphones have continued to be its primary focus. And recently, in an interview with Repubblica Italy, CEO Pete Lau spoke about what can we expect from the brand in the future.

Smartphones & foldable devices

The current strategy of the company consists of one flagship smartphone per year with an updated version around the time period of six months later which brings improved performance and a few refinements – the OnePlus 5T introduced an 18:9 panel and the OnePlus 6T comes with a smaller notch and in-display fingerprint scanner as well.

OnePlus is expected to follow a similar strategy this year, however, you will notice a few changes. In addition to the regular OnePlus 7, the company is preparing a OnePlus 7 Pro apparently. At the moment, it’s not clear what kind of extras this model will bring to the table, but chances are it could potentially be the company’s first 5G smartphone – OnePlus is expected to launch a 5G model alongside the OnePlus 7 coming month.

Again, the company is focusing this year to offer premium hardware at lower prices. The CEO expects the brand to continue “challenging” rival manufacturers while continuing to be profitable. However, the foldable segment is the one area it won’t be competing in anytime soon.

Pete Lau revealed that OnePlus had been considering a folding phone for over a year although admitted that it had not found any way to build a device that is quite good enough. The CEO stated that the company always pays attention to the usefulness of products and also claims that, in their current state, folding smartphones cannot be represented as the next generation device but for now they are nice devices and this won’t change in the near future due to the fact that they don’t do anything that we can call different.

In addition to the lack of new and unique features, Lau pointed towards the excessive thickness of current-gen foldables as one more reason to avoid the new format for the time being now. However, the CEO didn’t roll out a foldable smartphone in the future. But he suggested that once the technology matures OnePlus could enter the market, although this may take some time.

OnePlus TV

OnePlus TV

As OnePlus announced late last year that it is currently working on its first smart TV. However, all the details still remain scarce, but it seems the product will rely heavily on the buyer’s smartphone.

According to Pete Lau, the concept of picking up a remote control to turn on the television is already a dating system. And he hopes, OnePlus will definitely create a smart display – he doesn’t like the word TV that is always ready and somehow anticipates various needs with the help of integrated artificial intelligence. Users should be able to control the device through an app right on their OnePlus phone.

Information regarding the price and release date wasn’t provided but it was confirmed that the OnePlus TV will follow the usual philosophy of the company to offer premium tech without the premium price tag. It is expected that it’ll arrive by the end of this year.
