Apple’s AirPods continue to dominate the category of truly wireless headphones with a market share of over 50%. However, the second generation of the extremely popular accessory did not add to Apple’s already large participation in this market. According to information published by Counterpoint Research despite the release of the latest version of AirPods during the quarter, Apple’s market share remained at the same level seen in the last quarter, without growth despite the release of its second generation of AirPods. “Naturally, the new AirPods were not announced by the technology giant until March 20, almost at the end of the three-month period.
The second generation of AirPods replaced the W1 chip used in the original version with an H1 chip to improve Bluetooth connectivity. It has also reduced battery power, allowing Apple to promise a “talk time” 50% longer and allows users to switch between devices while listening to music for up to two faster times and now Siri can be called by saying “Hey Siri“. The update also added a new case for AirPods that will be loaded wirelessly. If the next iPhone 2019 models have wireless reverse charging, as they say, the new case can be placed on the back of one of the new units and turn it on. Naturally, this will happen at the expense of the battery inside the iPhone host.
Counterpoint noted that thanks to sales promotions made to liquidate the inventory, sales of first-generation AirPods were higher than expected during the quarter. Sales of second-generation AirPods were weaker than expected. Part of this could be due to confusion among consumers, many of whom expected the new shoots to be water resistant and have a new grip to keep them firmly in the ear of users. Those rumors and others about some kind of health care accessory for the accessory and a new black color option were well publicized before the new version was introduced. As a result, these are features that we will probably see when the third generation of AirPods come out later this year. Many consumers are most likely delaying the purchase of new AirPods and waiting for the next version of the device.

For The First Time, Samsung’s Galaxy Buds Help Put Samsung In Second Place
The graphics published by Counterpoint did not include real percentages, but we can see in the graphs that Apple’s AirPods have a great advantage over the Samsung Galaxy Buds in second place. Samsung’s “cumulative” mobile phones were launched earlier this year and delivered as an extra bonus to those who buy a Galaxy S10 line phone. By the way, the promotion is back until June 30th. The Galaxy Buds replaced IconX Gear in the Sammy line-up and helped the company jump on Jabra to take second place for the first time. The Jabra Elite Active 65t was on the third.
By the end of this year, we should see two other heavyweights on the market. This year, Amazon and Microsoft plan to launch their Bluetooth wireless headphones. The first one says that your device will be equipped with Alexa and that it will sound better and cost less than Apple’s ApplePod. Microsoft’s Surface Buds will include the integration of Cortana.
During the first quarter of this year, Counterpoint states that the size of what defines the true wireless market was 17.5 million units. It’s a 40% sequential gain since the fourth quarter of 2018. This is impressive because the fourth quarter of 2018 included the Christmas shopping season.
