The original iPhone prototype was more motherboard than phone

The look of the original iPhone prototype is a quite fascinating trip and what the research and development team of Apple had to deal with is to make the iPhone reality. There are many features in the prototype that you never expect to see in the actual smartphone and you can see all of these as they are display in the newly released photo section.

The photos of iPhone M68 prototype by The Verge shows that the team of Apple is basically working on a motherboard that could have an attached screen. For the actual display, there is a slot on the bottom right of the board. But developers did not have that screen, there were also RCA and other component connectors that are attached to an external display. There is also a slot for the sim card and a LAN port, phone jack to test out data and calling on the device. A 3.5mm headphone jack is a true evidence that we are looking at ancient history.

Reportedly, the prototype is used by the engineers that were tasked with the designing of original iOS software and for the purpose of testing the functionality for radio as well. You can also tell it is a prototype because of the board that itself is red which is the common indicator of Apple prototype whereas the commercial boards tend to be in color green o blue. The prototype also includes parts from different companies such as Samsung processor and storage module, chips from Intel, CSR, Marvell, Skyworks, and Infineon.

Overall, it is quite amazing to see how far the iPhone came from the last 12 to 13 years, not only the prototype but from the prototype to the eventually shipped product.
