The Sony Xperia 1R Could Be Launched As The First 5K Phone In The World

In September 2015, Sony announced the Xperia Z5 Premium as the first 4K smartphone in the world. It followed the success with Xperia 1 this February and it was debuted with the world’s first 4K HDR OLED display. Now, reports suggest that Sony could prepare the world’s first phone with a 5K panel.

A High Pixel Density Of 899ppi

As indicated by a new user agent profile, an upcoming Sony smartphone with model number J8220 has a 21:9 display with a massive 5K resolution of 5040 x 2160p. for comparison, Xperia 1 of the current generation has a 4K front panel (3080 x 1664), which ultimately provides 70% less total pixels.

Sony Xperia 1R

The device seems to be the Xperia 2 that was rendered a number of months ago. But according to the leaked information, it will not be sold under that name. Sony is planning to market the phone as an improved and more compact version of the Xperia 1 nicknamed Xperia 1R. Reportedly, the latter uses a 6.1-inch screen slightly smaller than the 6.5-inch panel in the current model. This, combined with the highest resolution, meaning Sony Xperia 1R should offer an incredible pixel density of 899 pixels per inch. For reference, the Xperia 1 has a density of 643ppi and even the HTC Vive Pro VR headset only offers 615ppi.

The display of the Sony Xperia 1R could easily be considered excessive if the company simply aims to obtain a more impressive technical sheet. But as the camper continues to grow and Sony itself is heavily involved in the market through its PlayStation brand it is certainly possible that the company has some game implementations focused on VR to help justify the higher resolution.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 Plus Could Make The Cut

Sony Xperia 1R

Despite potentially having one of the best smartphone screens, Sony Xperia needs to install 1R with its high-end processor to be truly worthy of the title of the flagship. The standard Xperia 1 includes Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855, which makes it the logical choice for monitoring. However, if Sony’s next smartphone includes some features that focus on virtual reality, you can choose Snapdragon 855 Plus.

The latest Qualcomm chip was announced earlier this week and will be used for the first time on Asus ROG Phone 2. It promises to take the games to the next level with the help of a 15% increase in performance of the Adreno 640 GPU and a slight increase in clock speed from 2.84 GHz to 2.96 GHz. As a standard, the chip is paired with a 4G LTE modem, but if the manufacturers want to do so, a separate 5G modem can be added.

Along with the processor, there should be at least 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, although an upgrade to 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage would certainly not be surprising. It is interesting to note that the previous losses indicated the presence of a small 3,200 mAh battery inside the Xperia 1R. This has not yet been confirmed, but it would certainly be disappointing considering the poor battery life that will probably generate as a result of the high-resolution display.

Announcement And Release Date Of Sony Xperia 1R

The Sony Xperia 1R should be official at the beginning of September at IFA 2019 in Berlin. If previous versions of the company are ready, Xperia 1R advance orders are unlikely to be started until the end of the month before launch in early October.

Sony may surprise everyone by reducing the time between the announcement and the launch, in an attempt to win the Apple 11 series iPhone and try to steal some of Samsung Galaxy Note 10 sales. But considering that the Japanese brand seems to have forged its niche in the market, this is not likely to happen.
