Trump Threatens To Look At Google Very Closely In A New Storm Of Tweets

The day after saying that hatred has no place in the US, President Donald Trump chased Google and its CEO Sundar Pichai. In a series of tweets, the president said that Pichai spoke with him at the Oval Office, where presumably the manager told Trump how much he liked and what a fine job the administration is doing. The president added that Pichai told him that Google was not involved in the Chinese army and that they did not have a propensity for Hillary Clinton in 2016. Trump wrote that the Google CEO said his company had no intention of “illegally subvert the 2020 Election despite all that has been said to the contrary.”  The latter seems to be a dirty accusation against Google.

What triggered the commander in chief today? It seems like Trump saw a segment of Lou Dobbs’ Fox Business program on a fired Google engineer named Kevin Cernekee who had talked to Fox’s Tucker Carlson. Cernekee told Carlson about Google that it really wants “Trump to lose in 2020. That’s their agenda.” Google has denied the allegations and we must point out that both Dobbs and Carlson have their own programs. Cernekee, according to some Google employees, has tried to promote some alternative law theories within the company. He claims that Google fired him for his beliefs, although Google says he was fired for downloading internal business documents on his mobile device.

Trump Has Already Attacked Google For A Perceived Bias

The segment of the Dobbs program included an appearance by Breitbart editor Peter Schweizer. The journalist drew Trump’s attention and the president tweeted that “@peterschweizer stated with certainty that they suppressed negative stories on Hillary Clinton, and boosted negative stories on Donald Trump. All very illegal. We are watching Google very closely!”

This is not the first time that the famously thin-skinned Trump attacks Google. In August 2018, Trump published a tweet accusing the company of manipulating the results of his research to make the president’s critical stories more important. The president had seen a report on Fox this weekend from the conservative blog PJ Media entitled: “96 Percent of Google Search Results for ‘Trump’ News Are from Liberal Media Outlets.” Of course, everyone has a right to their own opinions, but when someone has the power to create or destroy a business, the simple voice cannot be used as evidence. For example, a few hours after Trump wrote that tweet last year, his economic advisor Lawrence Kudlow said the administration was considering adjusting Google Search. Nothing came from that, of course.

However, Google has some real problems of its own creation. The US Department of Justice is studying possible anti-competitive behavior of Google along with other big technological names like Apple, Facebook, and Amazon. You will recall that last year the European Commission (EC) fined Google for 5 billion dollars for monopoly behavior. The EC found that Google forced phone manufacturers who wanted to license the Android version of Google Play services to pre-install the Chrome browser and the Google Search application. The company has also paid producers who have only installed the Google search engine application on their devices, blocking competitors. The EC has forced Google to include two pages on Android phones that allow users to choose a default browser between options like Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Opera, and Puffin. Another page offers Android users in Europe the ability to choose a default search engine between Google, Qwant, DuckDuck Go and others.
